Newbery Award Winning Author Christopher
Paul Curtis Visits the 15-LOVE Book Power Club
(11/13/2006)
15-LOVE Book Power Club participants from Giffen Elementary
School and Arbor Hill Elementary School, along with about 50 additional
third graders from Arbor Hill Elementary, were treated to a visit
by Newbery Award winning author Christopher Paul Curtis.
 |
Curtis
opened up the minds of the kids with a playful message about
his love of writing. Through vivid storytelling, he
then walked them through his bumpy journey to success. Curtis
kept the event interactive by frequently engaging the kids
to become part of the conversation, even handing $20 bills
to a few lucky kids whose participation particularly impressed
him. |
Towards the
end of this event, Curtis read a passage from his latest award
winning book, "Mr. Chickee's Funny Money." Every
kid in attendance went home with a copy of the book, courtesy
of the little d literary award committee.
15-LOVE would
like to thank "the little d literary award" and the
Children's Literature Connection for their cooperation in making
this event possible. Curtis was the 2006 recipient of the little
d literary award. This annual award is in memory of denise
McCoy, the founder of The Bookmark bookstore and an original member
of the CLC, for her contributions to children's literature. 15-LOVE
honored denise in 2004 with the establishment of the Denise McCoy
Memorial Scholarship in honor of her contributions to childhood
literacy and the 15-LOVE's program.
