ALBANY (March 27, 2002) - 15-LOVE, a program of the Capital Region Youth
Tennis Foundation which uses tennis as a medium to reach its greater goals
of promoting multicultural relationships, good health, fitness, education
and family interaction, was recently named one of the "Top Community Tennis
Associations of 2002" in the United States by Tennis Week magazine.
The program, founded in 1990 with the help of tennis legend and humanitarian,
Arthur Ashe, was given an honorable mention in the Feb. 14 issue for its
work providing free tennis and basic life skills to more than 1,000 inner
city children annually in Albany, Schenectady and Troy. Other programs
highlighted in the magazine's most recent survey include: The Sportmen's
Tennis Club (Dorchester, MA); National Junior Tennis League (Philadelphia,
PA); East Palo Alto Tennis & Tutuoring (Stanford, CA); Washington Tennis
& Education Foundation (Washington, DC); and, the Los Angeles Jr. Chamber
of Commerce Safe Passage Tennis Program (Los Angles, CA).
"We're very excited to have been honored as one of the 27 best Community
Tennis Associations in the nation," said Herbert Shultz, president of the
board of directors, noting that 7,000 youngsters have come through the
free program since its inception. "Some young people in the Capital
Region face some pretty tough odds everyday. 15-LOVE teaches kids
what it takes to succeed in life, while helping them learn what it takes
to succeed on the tennis court."
Throughout the year, 15-LOVE provides free tennis clinics at 19 sites
across the Capital Region. Following on-court instruction, children
take part in 30-minute off-court workshops designed to teach self-respect,
honor, discipline, good sportsmanship, and encourage excellence in education.
15-LOVE offers various educational programs and activities, including:
an Excellence Program designed to help tennis players succeed at competitive
play, field trips to cultural events, and summer camping opportunities.
The program also promotes education through: the 15-Love Book Power Club,
a volunteer-run after school reading program for Arbor Hill Community School
students; essay contests; and, a Scholastic Hall of Fame, in which students
with good grades are awarded for their academic accomplishments.
In addition, 15-LOVE assists high school juniors and seniors with the
college application, financial aid and selection process. 15-LOVE also
offers a Leadership Program, which enables high school students to improve
their interpersonal and leadership skills while performing a year-long
service project.
For more than for 28 years, Tennis Week has been one of the game's most
influential publications. Published every three weeks by Tennis News,
Inc., the magazine provides in-depth coverage of the sport, tournament
