5 Questions with our Tennis Instructors
Eleanor is an Albany native who lives in Latham and is a rising Junior at Emma Willard. She has been playing tennis since she was young and decided to join the varsity tennis team at Emma Willard and found out that she loved playing tennis just as much as she does swimming. She hopes by joining 15-LOVE this summer she will become better at working with children, her coworkers and supervisors.
Michaela is from upstate New York and attends Dartmouth College on a pre-med track, studying Biology with a double minor in Theatre and French. Her hope is one day to become a surgeon. Michaela has been involved with the 15-LOVE program since she was five years old. As a 15-LOVE instructor she hopes to give children the positive experiences that benefited her so much as a child, as well as foster relationships with them by being a good role model as a black woman in the STEM field. An interesting fact about Michalea is that she loves to sing and joined an acapella group at school.
Eldred was born in the Philippines, lives in Albany and is a Senior at Albany High School. He hopes to go to medical school to become a doctor. He was introduced to the 15-LOVE program through coaches seven years ago and is now an instructor. Some goals as an instructor are to gain vocal skills, be more outgoing and to understand how to effectively work with kids.
Gail is a Sophomore at SUNY Geneseo studying International Relations for the developing world. Her plans are to work in a developing world country in relation to health care and how to control the spread of disease. Her minor is Spanish and she dreams of working in Latin America. Gail is no stranger to the 15-LOVE program, as it's been a family affair for several years. She loves working with kids and hopes her time at 15-LOVE will allow her to become a better communicator with people of all ages. This past year she went on a service trip to Puerto Rico to help rebuild homes that were damaged by hurricane Maria.
Jonas is from the Philippines and is an incoming Freshman at Siena College. He's still figuring out what he wants to study, but is leaning toward business. Jonas has been in the program for 8 years. He hopes to become a better leader who is engaging with the kids and be able to gain stronger communication and leadership skills. Jonas enjoys listening to music and his favorite tennis shot is the volley. He also loves ice cream and enjoys the flavor ube. He recommends everyone to try it.
Alana is from Schenectady and is a Senior at Niskayuna High School. She hopes that when she goes to college, she can studying baking and pastry arts, and sociology. Her goal with a culinary arts degree is to open a bakery one day where people can indulge in sweets with a healthy twist. With her sociology degree, she wants to educate people on the importance of human rights and how everyone is equal. As for her goals as a 15-LOVE instructor, she’d like to gain better communication skills. She knows working with younger kids is a great way to build this skill. Also, as being an open-minded person, she hopes to share the importance of not discriminating against others based on race, sex or religion; something that she is very passionate about.
Henry is from Troy and recently graduated with a Bachelors in Business Administration. He will be attending Castleton University in the fall to work as an Assistant Director of Athletic Communications while working on his masters degree. He has been part of the 15-LOVE program since he was seven years old and eventually became a tennis instructor. Henry's goal as an instructor is to ensure the children have a positive experience and improve his communication skills. As one of seven siblings, Henry understands the importance of being a good team player.
Nasiru is from Troy and recently graduated from Shaker High School. In the fall he will attend the University at Albany to study Graphic Design. He hopes his degree will land him a job in sports marketing. He started with 15-LOVE in second grade, then became a volunteer and soon became a tennis instructor. He enjoys working with children. As an instructor he looks forward to teaching kids more about tennis, while having something fun to do. As for how he made his choice for college it came down to all the schools he wanted to see in the NCAA at age 14. After running a simulation tournament, SUNY Albany and SUNY Oneota were left. He arrived at his choice when SUNY Albany beat Oneonta 28-7. He has been looking forward to attending SUNY Albany since then.
Alyana is from Latham and is an incoming Freshman at SUNY Plattsburgh this year, with the plans to study Computer Science. She has volunteered with 15-LOVE since she was 10 years old, and this is her second year as an instructor. Her goals as an instructor are to gain more leadership and social experiences, while increasing her knowledge and patience.
Emily is from East Greenbush and attends Nazareth College enrolled in 3+3 doctorate of physical therapy program to become a physical therapist to work with athletes or young kids. Her goals as an instructor at 15-LOVE are to gain leadership and communication skills, as well as work with children of all ages. Something we didn't know about Emily is that she has pet sting rays.
Josh is from East Greenbush and is a Senior at Columbia High School. When he heads off to college next year, he wants to study environmental conservation. Josh is looking forward to new experiences and challenges that will make him a better instructor. He has participated in the Excellence Program the last few years and becoming an instructor was a natural transition. An interesting fact about Josh is that he also has pet sting rays.
Anjalee is from Schenectady and attends Niskayuna High School. When she heads off to college she will took to study human rights, specifically issues related to diversity, racism and sexism. She hopes to take what she learns to go into policy making and fighting for rights and issues that focus on race, gender and inclusion in schools and around the country. As an instructor for 15-LOVE she wants to gain a better understanding of giving back and being someone who naturally does what they can do to help others, as well as becoming a better coach and mentor for kids. An interesting fact about Anjalee is that she is a singer and participates in 2 vocal groups in high school and plans to continue music in college.
Avim has lived in Schenectady his whole life and his parents emigrated from Guyana. He is a Senior at Schenectady High School. He plans to apply to RPI's 7-year medical program to become a doctor. He has been part of the 15-LOVE Excellence program for the last 7 years. Avim strives to share his love for tennis with others, as well as be a positive role model for students. He wishes to further his communication and problem solving skills through his experience as a coach.
Mish is from Schenectady and is studying architecture at University of Hartford. When he graduates he hopes to get a job as an architect. His goal as a 15-LOVE instructor is develop better leadership qualities and how to work with others in a professional setting. Don't expect Mish to have pencils on hand, he prefers writing with pens. And please don't offer him bananas as he's allergic.
Samaria is from Schenectady and is in the 11th grade. She plans to study Cognitive Psychology in college. She has been involved with the 15-LOVE program for many years as a player and is excited to be involved as a coach. She hopes to learn leadership skills and the experience of working with kids of all ages and backgrounds. She also wants her experience to help her create deeper bonds with her coworkers. A fun fact about Samaria is she holds a first degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
